Westinghouse Gear Drive Sliding Pinion / Sliding Engagement Assembly

Description

Westinghouse Sliding Assembly – Typical Specifications

Function

  • Provides mechanical engagement and disengagement between a low-speed auxiliary drive (jacking/turning motor) and the main driven shaft.

  • Allows slow rotation of heavy equipment during:

    • Start-up

    • Shutdown

    • Cool-down / warm-up

    • Maintenance and inspection

Assembly Type

  • Sliding Pinion / Sliding Gear Engagement Assembly

  • Axially movable gear mounted on a splined shaft

  • Engages a bull gear, ring gear, or coupling hub gear

Mechanical Design

  • Gear Type: Helical or double-helical (herringbone on heavier units)

  • Engagement Method:

    • Manual lever, or

    • Power-assisted (electric or pneumatic actuator depending on build)

  • Shaft Interface: Involute spline (axial sliding, torsional lock)

  • Bearing Support: Heavy-duty roller or sleeve bearings in gear housing

Operating Speed

  • Input Speed (jacking motor side): typically 1,500–1,800 RPM

  • Output Speed (turned shaft): approximately 0.05 – 0.3 RPM
